Stump Socks vs. Stump Shrinkers: What's the Difference?

If you're new to limb loss, two terms come up fast: stump socks and stump shrinkers. They sound similar and are sometimes used interchangeably, but they do very different jobs. Here's a clear, honest breakdown so you know what you actually need.
What is a stump shrinker?
A stump shrinker is a tight, elastic garment that applies graduated compression to your residual limb. It's most often used in the weeks and months after amputation surgery to reduce swelling (edema), help shape the limb so it fits a prosthesis, and manage fluid. Compression is firmest at the end of the limb and eases higher up. Shrinkers are usually recommended by your prosthetist or care team, come in specific compression levels and sizes, and are typically worn when you're not wearing your prosthesis (often overnight).
The key point: a shrinker is a medical compression device. If your goal is to control swelling or shape your limb, that's what you want — and your clinician should guide the fit.
What is a stump sock?
“Stump sock” actually covers two different things:
- Prosthetic stump socks (ply socks): thin socks worn between your residual limb and the prosthetic socket. They cushion, wick sweat, and — by adding or removing “plies” (thickness) — fine-tune socket fit as your limb volume changes through the day.
- Decorative stump socks / limb covers: soft, printed socks worn over the residual limb for comfort, light protection and, most of all, style. This is what we make at Amputee Sock Prints.

Can you use both?
Yes — many amputees do. You might wear a compression shrinker to manage swelling, ply socks for socket fit during the day, and a decorative stump sock when you want to show some personality instead of plain medical beige.
