How to Measure for a Stump Sock or Prosthetic Sleeve (BK & AK)

Getting the right size matters — a stump sock or prosthetic sleeve that fits well is comfortable, stays put, and looks the way it should. Here's how to measure at home in a couple of minutes.

What you'll need

A soft cloth tape measure (the kind used for sewing). If you only have a rigid tape or ruler, wrap a piece of string around the limb, mark it, then measure the string.

Measuring for a stump sock

Stump socks are sized by your amputation level and residual limb size:

• Below-the-knee (BK): measure the circumference around the widest part of your residual limb, and the length from just below the knee to the end of the limb.
• Above-the-knee (AK / ATKA): measure the circumference at the widest part and the length from the top of the thigh to the end of the limb.
• Arm socks: select designs come in adult (AAS) and pediatric (PAS) arm sizes.

Measuring for a prosthetic sleeve

Prosthetic sleeves slip over your socket or pylon and come in XL and XXL. Measure the circumference of the widest part of the prosthesis where the sleeve will sit, and the length you'd like covered, then check the size guide.

Tips for an accurate measurement

• Measure snug but not tight — don't compress the limb.
• Measure at the time of day you'll usually wear it, since limb volume changes through the day.
• When you're between two sizes, size up.
